WHAT IS LIVING LANGUAGE?

Reading and Writing well are essential components of a successful and productive life. But beyond this truth lie the mysteries, music and meanings that language holds for us. Coming together to explore language through discussion, writing and shared experience is a powerful experience for girls.

Campers will investigate and discover how writers have translated the truths and perceptions of their lives into language. We will learn how to help each other bring life and sparkle to our writings and study reading in a way that allows us access to much more than what is on the page. We will discover how to translate our lives into language and how to bring our language to life!

A TYPICAL DAY AT LIVING LANGUAGE CAMP

Campers arrive at 9 am still a little sleepy, we settle around the table with tea and morning snacks.

Journals in hand, we begin the day with our "morning pages" followed by prompted free writing, discussion of short poems or selections of prose from a wide variety of authors and styles. Language games and exercises warm us up and get the creative juices going.

before lunch we transition into a book group format where we will discuss one of the books from our list

This time allows campers to discover and share their thoughts about what they're reading. During this time elements of craft and style will be examined and clarified. We'll use these books as points of departure to discuss the craft of writing and relevant themes/connections to our lives.

Then there will be time for sharing what we've written (optional).

On some days I will lead what is known as a writer's workshop. We will all learn how to be sensitive, respectful and helpful readers and co-writers to each other. I will guide our discussion and help campers with the process of giving and receiving verbal and written feedback on each others writing.

Then it's time for Lunch!

After Lunch we will have a shared activity time. Some days a guest will speak to us and guide us in an area of their specialization (cooking, nature, astrology, yoga, etc..) other days we'll be planting poetry gardens,

painting our poetry on silk,

exploring Wildcat Canyon,

creating language lamps....

cooking a meal

making music and mosaics

enjoying a guest presentation

We'll thread our activities with periods of writing and discussion. And before we know it, the day will be over and our hearts and minds will be buzzing with ideas and language!

Campers will receive a "camp itinerary" one month before the Session begins outlining the specifics of each session.
