The experiences of reading and creative writing can be full of joy and creativity. We all have stories to tell, and deserve to find the language that will help us express ourselves and understand others clearly, and in a way that feels authentic and true.

I decided when I was twelve that I was a writer. I dragged my mom's clunky manual typewriter out of the closet, claimed it as mine and vowed to write a poem every day because that felt serious. I still remember the joy and satisfaction of the percussive clacking of that old typewriter, and I still have the reams of paper I filled with the poetry of my pre-teen and teen years!

I remember the strong impact books made on my understanding of myself and the world beyond my immediate surroundings. What an amazing time in a girls life, full of change and self discovery.

I began Living Language Camp to help girls discover the language that arises naturally from their experience of their world and their senses. Through art, crafts, and a great lineup of guests from many fields ,we cultivate an environment of joyful discovery for our own writing . We learn from sharing writing, experience, and thoughts with each other.

And we have fun while we're at it!!

Stay tuned for our 2007 lineup of guests who will guide us in many exciting experiences!

We'll combine fun hands on activities with techniques such as free-writing, writers workshops, study of style and craft in poetry and prose, and close reading/discussion of the works of published authors. Campers will deepen their connections to reading and writing through the process of finding language for their own thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

"Most of the basic material a writer works with is acquired before the age of fifteen."

- Willa Cather

"Close the door. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It's the one and only thing you have to offer."

- Barbara Kingsolver

"How do I know what I think until I see what I say?"

- E. M. Forster
